Follicular proliferation in aspiration cytology of thyroid nodules

The diagnostic usefulness and therapeutic implications of the aspiration thyroid biopsy were analyzed in 32 patients with cold nodules in whom a diagnosis of neoplasia vs. follicular proliferation had been made and who had undergone surgical operation. Only 7 out of 32 patients with this potentially malignant cytological pattern really had thyroid carcinoma, and 31.2% had histological follicular neoplasias.sbd.adenomas and carcinomas. In more than 75 of cases the performed operation was unnecessary considering the absence of histological malignity. These results indicate a low diagnostic usefulness and a poor yield of aspiration biopsy in patients with follicular proliferation. Considering that this is not its only limitation, it does not seem reasonable to suggest its use as an isolated test, but rather to use it as a part of a protocol that prevents possible diagnostic and therapeutic errors.
