Yeast organisms associated with human oral leukoplakia

Microscopical examination of biopsies or smears from patients (in Denmark and other countries) with oral leukoplakia has revealed the presence of yeasts in 10-85%. Attempts to isolate the yeast from oral leukoplakia patients in Denmark are discussed. Yeasts were isolated from most samples, Candida albicans predominating (67-80% of yeasts isolated). There was no obvious difference in species composition between leukoplakia and normal mucosa. Str. differentiation of isolates of C. albicans from 4 patients revealed that all were different; in 1 patient, 3 of 4 isolates from leukoplakia and normal mucosa were different.
