The level of bone mineral content (BMC) was assessed in 136 patients with chronic renal failure (on maintenance hemodialysis) using single photon absorptiometry. The patients were separated into groups, according to sex and age, and their bone density value was compared to that of corresponding groups of normal, healthy individuals. Analysis of our finding reveals that the BMC was significantly lower (p < 0.01) in the patients than in the control group. A mean difference of 15% was noted. The relationship between BMC values and the time of maintenance dialysis was also studied in order to discern the connection between osteopenia and dialytic treatment.
