The haemoglobin A value in cord blood of 20 healthy newborn infants in Taiwan was 27 +or- 4.3% (mean +or- s.d.). It increased rapidly after birth and reached 90 +or- 4.8% at 6 months old, and then increased slowly to 96 +or- 5.1% at 24 months old. The Hb A value in adults was 97 +or- 1.7%. The Hb F value of cord blood was 73 +or- 4.4%. It decreased rapidly after birth and reached 7.3 +or- 4.8% at 6 months old, and then decreased slowly to 0.5 +or- 1.0% at 24 months old. The Hb F value in adults was 0.3 +or- 0.9%.
