This is one of a group of studies based on investigations carried out in North-West Pakistan in 1967/68 on a range of problems to do with economic development. This part of the study deals with the human labour problem in a situation where the disposable labour and entrepreneurship are only patchy. Individual chapters deal with (1) human labour, the theoretical framework; (2) the employment situation; (3) the readiness for occupational mobility; (4) the employment-seeking villager; (5) work, occupation and social stratification; (6) factory employment from the villager's point of view; (7) village factory workers from the point of view of the business. Appendices set out geographical and demographic data about the study area as well as details of the methods of selecting the sample villages and of carrying out the investigation.
