Rare side-effects of oral anticoagulant therapy

Vasculitis, hemorrhagic necrosis and purple toes are rare but serious side-effects of oral anticoagulant therapy. The family physician should recognize them as soon as possible, before the condition deteriorates and extensive gangrene and infection set in. A 32-year-old man was treated with warfarin sodium (Comadin) and developed a 3 .times. 7 cm area of hemorrhagic necrosis of the left leg and a generalized papular rash. Immediate diagnosis and discontinuation of the drug prevented serious damage.
