The authors have evaluated the response of two groups of patients affected by diabetes, for a time of at least 10 years, using respectively cerebral gangliosides and placebo, associated to the adjustment of the glycemic profile, based on two parameters: time of gastric emptying, secretory response to the inhibition with PR 20 mg plus R 17 mg of gastric secretion stimulated with pentagastrin, and the gastrinemic curves. The results have shown a significant and favorable response to the treatment with gangliosides for each of the parameters with a percentage respectively of 70, 83, 22 and 60%; on the other hand the treatment with placebo to a normalized glycemic profile did not give any significative modifications. In conclusion the authors underline the validity of use of cerebral gangliosides in cases of gastric motor secretory function alterations of the diabetic, and the small influence of the normalization of carbohydrate metabolism on long-standing peripheral neuropathy.
