Echocardiography has revealed three stages in the development of myocardial dystrophy in 68 diabetes mellitus patients. The first stage is characterized by the impaired relaxation of the myocardium; in the second stage there is concomitant dilatation of the left ventricle, and the third stage is attended by concomitant dysfunction of myocardial contractility. All these conditions depend on the severity and duration of diabetes mellitus. It is practically important to differentiate and identify these stages for more adequate prevention and treatment of myocardial dystrophy in diabetes mellitus.
