A technical review considers evidence concerning the association of overweight, as related to body size and mass, with breast cancer risk. It is argued that, while the hypothesis that obesity is a risk factor for breast cancer has gained acceptance, the importance of overweight in breast cancer prevention still is unclear. Difficulties associated with the definition of overweight and other factors affecting the accuracy of predicting subsequent breast cancer incidence also are discussed.
