Levels of total serum IgE (by radioimmunosorbent test) and percentages of specific IgE antibodies to Trypanosoma cruzi (by RAST) in patients in Santa Fe, Argentina, were: 190 IU/ml and 3.99% in 28 children aged one to 5 years with acute infection; 387 IU/ml and 3.41% in 25 adults with chronic infection and clinical cardiopathy; 259.4 IU/ml and 3.38% in 25 adults with chronic infection but no cardiopathy; and 108.4 IU/ml and 3.13% and 57.9 IU/ml and 2.87% in 10 healthy adults and in 10 healthy children resp. There was a significant correlation between the levels of total serum IgE and specific IgE antibodies.
