In May-June 1984, forty children died in Katiola (Cote-d' Ivoire) presumably after ingestion of unripe arillus from Blighia sapida (Sapindaceae). An experimental study on the rat indicate that toxicity of hypoglycin A contained in the arillus is raised by starvation and that daily ingestion of infratoxic doses produce a cumulative and delayed hypoglycemic effect that can be lethal. The ripe arillus, that contain less hyopoglycin A, could so produce this cumulative and delayed effect on starving children.
