In the investigations for the demonstration of the risk factors for ischaemic heart disease a general population of males aged 40-59 years were studied in two city districts of Warsaw.sbd.Saska Kepa and Brodno (4605 subjects, in all). According to WHO criteria hypertension was found in 26.9% of the population of Saska Kepa and 19.7% of the Brodno population. The prevalence in both districts increased with age. Among the studied males newly detected hypertension was noted in 46.7% of the Saska Kepa population and 37.5% of the Brodno population. Among the subjects knowing that they had hypertension 32.3% were not treated in the Saska Kepa district and 27.6% in the Brodno district. Significant differences in the prevalence of hypertension could be explained by differences in the distribution of age groups, social differences and habits of the population of both districts.
