Treatment of essential systemic arterial hypertension with captopril only. Evaluation especially in aged patients

The effect of the converting enzyme inhibitor captopril as long term (six months) treatment was investigated in 33 patients with moderate essential hypertension (WHO phase I-II). Patients were subdivided into two group: group 1-17 subjects average age 50,59 years; group 2-16 subjects age 76,12 years. All patients were treated with captopril only, dosage was tailored to reach satisfactory B.P. values. After six months no significant differences between the groups were found concerning: a) captopril dosage (average 77,99 vs 84,37 mg. ns); b) therapeutic efficacy: significant (p < 0.001) reduction of systolic and diastolic B.P. in both groups: c) absence of side effects; no orthostatic hypotension, no changes in renal function, no sreum electrolytic alterations, no change in L.V. function index.
