An analysis of the treatment of attacks of acute intermittent porphyria in 60 cases demonstrated that before the diagnosis of porphyria, which was made in most cases late after the appearance of the first symptoms, the patients received various drugs harmful for them, mainly analgesics, sedatives and hypnotics. In some cases these harmful drugs leading to increased porphyrin synthesis were given after the diagnosis of porphyria. Only half the patients were treated correctly after establishing of the diagnosis of porphyria. Forty-six out of sixty attacks of porphyria were very severe and long-lasting. In patients with early diagnosed and correctly treated porphyria a fully developed attack occurs very rarely.
