Modern intrauterine contraceptive devices offer better protection against pregnancy than any other method except oral preparations. The associated complications can be kept at a minimum by the proper selection of patients and by careful insertion. This form of contraception is significant for mass population control and for unmotivated women who cannot use other methods consistently. It is also quite satisfactory for private patients who are willing to accept the slight risk of pregnancy for the constant degree of protection that it affords.
