At four beef bull performance testing centres accepting animals from different sources at about 6 months of age, alternate bulls were injected i/m at 7-10 days with 20 mg/kg of oxytetracycline dihydrate. The trial was held for two years in one centre and for one year in three (autumn and winter months only). There were 10.8% fewer cases of respiratory disease in the treated bulls, but this was not significant, though there was an indication that the risk of respiratory disease was reduced at some centres. Of the 54 cases during the first 21 days, 34 (63%) were in untreated bulls.
