The effect of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) on hosts' erythropoiesis were studied in Strain A mice. A reduction in the rate of erythropoiesis, as determined by 59Fe incorporation into circulatory erythrocytes, and a significant decline (P < 0.05) in 51Cr-labeled RBC were observed at day 15 post-transplantation. Bone marrow erythropoietic activity based on femoral uptake of injected 59Fe was significantly decreased (P < 0.01), whereas enhanced erythropoiesis was observed in the spleen. Concomitantly, an alteration of similar pattern was noted in the number of pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells (CFUs) in the femoral marrow and spleen of EAC mice. Ineffective erythropoiesis was significantly increased in the spleen of tumor-bearers. The erythropoietic disorder in this experimental model for malignancy-associated anemia appears to be not secondary to impaired Fe transport or altered level of plasma erythropoietin. The existence of an inhibitor(s) or inactivator of erythropoietin activity was also unlikely.
