Occurrence of the genus Salmonella in wild animals of the order Edentata in the Amazon Region, north of the state of Pará, Brazil

From March 1980 to April 1981, intestinal contents and enteric lymph nodes were collected in the Amazon Region from the following wild animals; 57 Choloepus didactylus, 32 Tamandua tetradactyla, 27 Dasypus novemcinctus and 7 Cabassous unicinctus. Salmonella was isolated from 28 (22.7%) out of the 123 animals, belonging to 16 different serotypes and 1 strain was not yet serologically identified. S. san diego was shown to be the prevelant serotype followed by S. seremban and S. anatum. Results showed that Edentata seem to be a most important natural reservoir of Salmonella.
