The annual ovarian cycle of Mystus pittatus is divided into 4 phases: resting, previtellogenic, vitellogenic and post spawning phase. During these phases, changes in total lipid, phospholipid, RNA content and activity of ovarian .DELTA.5-3.beta.-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were demonstrated with the help of histochemical techniques. Granulosa cells of ovarian follicle and stroma cells were observed to be the sites of steroidogenesis. Interrelationship of activity of steroidogenic enzymes and change in total lipid, phospholipid and RNA content during the growth and maturation of oocytes is discussed in the light of recent literature.
