The structure of the olfactory epithelium of the freshwater teleostean catfish C. batrachus was studied. It comprises sustentacular cells, olfactory neurons (primary and secondary) and basal and mucous cells. In addition, the olfactory epithelium contains a new type termed secondary neurons. Synaptic connections between the axonal endings of a few primary neurons and the dendritic endings of a few secondary neurons were also observed. The olfactory sensory neurons are replaced from the basal cells.
