Fever and neutropenias

77 febrile episodes in neutropenic patients were documented in a 2-year prospective study. Infection was documented in a 2-year prospective study. Infection was documented microbiologically in 32 cases, including 23 bacteremic episodes, and was documented clinically in 15 episodes. Total mortality, 48%, was significantly greater in those with initial neutrophil counts below 100/mm3 and in those with initial neutrophil counts of 500/mm3 which subsequently decreased. Major sources of injection were pneumonia, primary bacteremia and skin and soft tissue infections (mortality rates 81%, 58% and 50%, respectively). Escherichia coli, Klebsiella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the most common pathogens.
