Personality trait profiles of 98 obese patients are described and compared to the personality trait profiles of controls using the Karolinska Scales of Personality approach. Relative to controls, male and female obese patients exhibited higher scores for somatic anxiety, muscular tension, impulsiveness, and monotony avoidance, and lower scores for socialization. Patients selecting a behavioral modification therapy had higher scores for psychasthenia and lower scores for monotony avoidance than patients selecting a jaw fixation therapy. The results are discussed in terms of the interassociation between personality and obesity.(wz)
