A new Rifamycin antibiotic, Rifaximin, with a good antimicrobial activity against Gram+ and Gram- bacteria and with a peculiarly scarce intestinal absorption (its activity being therefore localized in the intestinal lumen) was used for the treatment of 20 patients (aged between 24 and 75) suffering from bacterial enterocolitis. All the patients, who received doses varying from 800 to 1200 mg/die for 5 days, showed a rapid improvement of clinical conditions and a reduction in the number of daily stools. At the end of treatment, in almost all the cases fecal cultures did not evidence those pathogenic strains that were present in the faeces prior to therapy (Yersinia 1 case, Shigella 4 cases, Group B Salmonella 4 cases and Escherichia coli 11 cases). Tolerance was always very good.
