Prophylactic mezlocillin therapy in cesarean section

Recent literature has documented the efficacy of prophylactic antibiotic treatment for the prevention of post-cesarean infection. A prospective randomized study of mezlocillin in 80 patients after cesarean section is presented. Half received three IV injections of 2 g mezlocillin during the first eight hours after the operation, while in the other half there was no prophylactic treatment. The postoperative morbidity of non-elective cesarean section was reduced from 40 to 15% in the mezlocillin group. In elective sections there was no significant difference between the two groups.
