Child labour in Zaria, Nigeria

A total of 200 children (aged 5-15 years; 82% were male) who were engaged in child labour in Zaria City, Nigeria were studied to obtain data on sociodemographic characteristics, socioeconomic factors influencing child labour, and impact of child labour on health status, and school attendance and performance. Majority (57.5%) of the children were aged 11-13 years; mean age, 11.4+or-2.4 years. Most of the children were Hausas (92%), and all of them were Muslim. Among the health hazards experienced by the children were physical abuse (by their seniors) (61%), cuts (52.3%), and falls (23.4%). About 33.8% had poor school performance.
