An article is presented discussing the potential impact of novel and functional foods on the prevention and/or therapy of protein energy malnutrition, iodine deficiency disorders, vitamin A deficiency, iron deficiency anaemia, overweight, obesity, neoplasms, cardiovascular diseases, and osteoporosis. Functional foods can also enhance immunity and prolong life. The role of biotechnology and molecular biology is also discussed.
