The significance of hexosemonophosphate shunt (HMP) to the metabolic degradation of glucose in developing human foetal brain has been recognized by determining the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH) and tranketolase. Both the cerebrum and cerebellum show high level of activities at the early period, particularly, between 18th and 24th weeks of gestational ages, coinciding with the rapid rate of nucleic acid and lipid biosynthesis at this phase. This observation in turn reveals the involvement of HMP pathway in neuronal growth of human foetus.
