Wistar rats were weaned prematurely on the 15th day or normally on the 30th day to a standard Larsen diet or high-fat variants isocaloric with it or hyper-caloric. Females were mated at 3 months of age and thereafter when their litters had been weaned at 30 days; the study lasted 2 years and at the end 160 males and 179 females, 56 and 63% of the initial rats, survived. Some of the rats were allowed a choice of water and 1% NaCl solution to drink.
