Clinical specimens were collected from infants with pneumonia (nasopharyngeal and conjunctival specimens), asymptomatic pregnant women (endocervical specimens) and sexual partners with acute follicular conjunctivitis (conjunctival swabs) in Japan . The serovars of the clinical specimens based on the genotype of Chlamydia trachomatis according to its major outer membrane protein (MOMP) gene sequences were determined. The results showed that specimens from infants belonged to serovars D, E, F, H and variants of serovar D. The specimens from pregnant women belonged to serovars D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, and variants of serovars D and B. The specimens from sexual partners with acute follicular conjunctivitis belonged to serovars G, D and E. The serovars identified from infants and pregnant women were similar to those reported in other studies from trachoma non-endemic areas and were thought to be mainly of urogenital tract in origin. It is concluded that C. trachomatis serovars of trachoma endemic areas have been existing and predominantly associated with trachoma in Japan.
