The fungal flora of a kerosene-polluted soil was investigated in Nigeria. Soil samples collected from a fallow area of land were treated with 90, 180 and 270 ml kerosene. The untreated soil served as a control. Cultures of the organisms present in each soil sample were prepared on potato dextrose agar (PDA) after 2, 7 and 14 days after treatment. The fungal genera isolated were Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, Penicillium sp., Rhizopus sp., Fusarium sp., Saccharomyces sp., and Mucor sp. All the organisms occurred in the control samples. Aspergillus, Penicillium, Rhizopus and Saccharomyces spp. occurred in the contaminated samples at all 3 kerosene concentrations. Rhizopus and Aspergillus spp. grew rapidly in all the three concentrations, whereas Penicillium, Fusarium, Mucor and Saccharomyces spp. showed delayed growth in the samples containing the three concentrations.
