The incidence of cryptorchidism was 4.12% (4/97) in premature baby, 1.44% (16/1,111) in mature baby and 0.77% (27/3,521) in 6 years old boy, respectively in Tao-Yuan area. Among 88 operated cryptorchid testes, 9 cases had anomalies of epididymis and/or vas deferens, 5 were anorchia and 1 possessed an intra-abdominal teratoma. However, no carcinoma in situ was encountered. Histopathologic examination of 32 cryptorchid testes revealed: (1) Fibrosis of intertubular space and hyaline thickening of tubular wall began at the age of 9 years and became gradually prominent after puberty, the latter was more marked than the former as time went on (2). There was no increase in number or size of Leydig cell except No. 22, 23, 24, in which Leydig cell hyperplasia appeared and presumed to be the result of estrogen intake. (3) The damage on spermatogenesis evidenced from decrease of average tubular diameter and smaller numbers of spermatogonia compared to normal control was detectable from the beginning of the third year of life and persistant thereafter. It was suggested that orchiopexy should be performed before 2 years old.
