The therapeutic effects of an H2-receptor antagonist were evaluated in 27 cases of reflux esophagitis and the following results were obtained. 1) The disappearance rates of subjective and objective symptoms were 64% within one week, 76% within two weeks, 88% within four weeks and 92% within 8 weeks. 2) Endoscopically the healing rate was evaluated as 63% within 8 weeks, and 87% after 24 weeks with an improvement rate of 96%, indicating the usefulness of long-term administration of the drug in refractory cases. 3) There were some cases showing delayed healing in spite of a long term administration of the H2-receptor antagonist. 4) Prevention of relapse was possible to some extent by maintenance therapy. On the basis of these results, H2-receptor antagonists appear to be very useful for treatment of reflux esophagitis, and should replace other drugs in treatment of this condition.
