This paper focuses on the implications of patents on access to drugs and the role that activism plays in challenging the view that antiretroviral treatment for acquired immune deficiency syndrome is not possible in developing countries (as experienced in South Africa and Thailand). Campaign achievements, ethics of access to treatment and experiences with antiretroviral therapy in developing countries are discussed.
