This paper discusses current guidelines in assuring the rights of study participants, and reviews the experiences in 3 randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded clinical trials of potential new human immunodeficiency virus prevention technologies. The education of study participants to obtain informed consent, reducing and monitoring risky behaviour during a trial, and the role of community participation are discussed.
