Artificial insemination in the cat (Felis catus L.)

A technique was developed for artificial insemination of the cat. Semen was collected from toms, using an artificial vagina. The average ejaculate volume was 0.04 ml, containing 56.5x 106 spermatozoa. Toms could be ejaculated 2-3 times per wk without significantly lowering their sperm count. A typical ejaculate was diluted with saline to 1.0 ml, and 0.l ml of this sample was deposited into the anterior vagina or posterior cervix of an oestrous queen.
