Eyelid swabs were obtained from children (one hundred per school) showing signs of follicular conjunctivitis in two schools in Guangxi, China, to confirm the suspicion of trachomal infection. Amplicor PCR analysis of the samples indicated an incidence of 29% in the first school and 8% in the other. In the village with a higher prevalence, the children, including the other members of their household, were treated with azithromycin, whereas in the other village, only the children were treated, based on WHO guidelines. Health education regarding disease prevention and proper hygiene was also conducted in the villages.
