A clinicopathological appraisal in a series of 19 patients with unicystic ameloblastomas was performed. Comparisons were also made of clinical data between this series of 19 patients with unicystic ameloblastomas and another series of 67 patients with solid or multicystic ameloblastomas. Based on the findings in this study, the unicystic ameloblastoma is distinguished from the solid or multicystic ameloblastoma by the following features: (a) the younger ages of the patients; (b) the lower rate of recurrence after enucleation; and (c) the unicystic appearance seen on radiographic and gross examinations. It is also by these features that the unicystic ameloblastoma is recently classified as a prognostically distinct entity of ameloblastoma with a less aggressive biological behaviour. However, the unicystic ameloblastoma can not be construed as an innocent lesion since recurrence in an aggressive manner has been found in 4 cases of this series.
