Suprapubic catheter in complex vaginal operations

Urinary disturbances are very common following vaginal operations, especially plastic repair or Kelly suture, which require repeated urethral catheterizations. Suprapubic catheterization overcomes these problems and has been used widely in our department since 1981. 32 patients with a suprapublic catheter were compared to 48 patients with a urethral catheter. There were no significant differences according to type of operation, age, length of hospitalization or time till removal of catheter. Urinary tract infection with positive culture in 6.3% of patients with suprapubic catheter was significantly less than the 29.2% in those with urethral catheter (p < 0.05). There was a significant reduction (p < 0.01) in the number of urethral catheterizations required in patients with a suprapubic catheter. This spared much inconvenience for the patients and reduced the load on the staff. This method is recommended in operations in which urinary disturbances are anticipated.
