This article chronologically outlines the progress made in the area of tuberculosis (TB) control in India: (i) the era of pre-drug therapy; (ii) BCG immunization campaign that started in early 1950s; (iii) the era of conventional drug therapy (1961-1986); (iv) the era of short course drug therapy (1986-1993); and (v) the era of directly observed treatment short course (DOTS; 1993-2005). The era of DOTS is marked by the implementation of the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP), which is also described in this paper. The importance of involving the medical colleges, private practitioners and non-governmental organizations into the RNTCP is highlighted.
