E. gingivalis was identified in Papanicolaou-stained sputum smears of 2 patients in Nashville, USA. The trophozoites were seen to phagocytose leucocytes as well as RBCs, unlike E. histolytica which phagocytoses only RBCs. The concomitant finding of Actinomyces sp. in one patient reinforces the possible symbiotic relationship between the 2 organisms.
