The purpose of this study is to estimate the reliability of cardiac output measurement with Doppler method. The values obtained by Doppler method were compared with that of thermodilution determination in six patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm during operations. Ascending aortic blood velocity was measured from suprasternal approach by ultrasonic pulsed Doppler blood velocity meter, ALVA type U4. Cardiac output was determined as the products of heart rate by stroke volume which was calculated by (integrated Doppler shift) .times. (cross area of ascending aorta). Cross area of ascending aorta was measured by transesophageal M node echocardiography. Thirty-eight pairs of measurement were performed. The results showed a good linear relationship between Doppler method and thermodilution (Thermo = 1.04 .times. Doppler + 0.672 r = 0.805). Doppler method is non-invasive and easy, and may be useful for cardiac output monitoring during operations. Though Doppler method has still many limitations for clinical application, this non-invasive technique is convenient, safe and suitable for serial measurement of cardiac output during operations.
