An article discussing national surveys on demography and family health status in India is presented. Several pertinent issues including data quality, survey cost, lack of information on health issues relating to men, multiplicity of information sources, nutrition information, women's empowerment and reproductive health, poverty, child labour, female work, and illiteracy are addressed.
