Data are discussed concerning a defect in dietary-induced thermogenesis for about 1/3 of an unselected group of obese women, noting that a reduced thermogenic response to food intake may contribute to the dynamic phase of weight gain in obesity development. The observed thermogenic defect is not alleviated by weight loss on a calorie-restricted diet. Noting that the basal metabolic rate declines with weight loss, the overall energy expenditure of "post-obese" women after eating can be less than that of non-post-obese lean control subjects. It is therefore concluded that post-obese women must adjust their energy intake to a level that is less than their previous maintenance energy intake level to avoid body weight regain. Relevant literature concerning these data are reviewed and discussed.(wz)
