Survey of fungal isolates from alopecic and asymptomatic dogs

In the summer of 1982 and 1983, samples of hair and skin scrapings were taken from representatives of 60 breeds in Belgium, and were examined by direct microscopy or by Wood's ultraviolet lamp. Specimens from 180 healthy dogs were negative. Fungi were identified in 3 of 142 dogs with diffuse hair loss by means of direct microscopy, and in another 2 cases by means of Wood's lamp. Upon culture of these specimens, fungi were recovered from 12 (8.4%) of the apparently healthy dogs and 40 (22.2%) of those with hair loss. 20 isolates of Trichophyton mentagrophytes, 17 of Microsporum canis, 2 of M. gypseum and 2 of Keratinomyces ajelloi were obtained, mostly from cases of alopecia. Three isolates of Candida albicans and 8 of Pityrosporum pachydermatis were not regarded as pathogens.
