Quantitative study of the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hedgehog in two different physiological situations

The authors studied the supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nucleus of the hedgehog in two different physiological situations-the periods of activity and hibernation. A quantitative study of the neurons of each of the given nuclei was made and the existence of two neuronal subpopulations composed of rounded and fusiform neurons was observed, in which the latter were in the majority. During hibernation the ratio of fusiform to rounded neurons rose sharply in favour of the fusiform neurons. Comparison of the means, of probability density function and of the cell and nuclear diameters of the two neuronal subpopulations showed no significant differences between the two physiological periods, however. When the neurons of the supraoptic and paraventricular nucleus were compared, significant statistical differences were found between the means and frequency distribution.
