Plasma thiopentone conc. was inversely related to the quantity of high amplitude (at least 150 micro v) sharp waves and slow waves in EEG patterns of cats during stage III or IV anaesthesia, but not during recovery. Acute tolerance to thiopentone during recovery was indicated by a high plasma conc. of the drug in cats able to move and in cats only rightly anaesthetized. Additionally, EEG patterns of recovering cats were dissociated from stage of anaesthesia and behaviour, because there were more than the expected numbers of high amplitude slow waves and sharp waves in EEG patterns of cats which were lightly anaesthetized or capable of involuntary or voluntary movement. A given EEG pattern or thiopentone conc. could not be associated with a given stage of anaesthesia.
