Influence of balsam pear (the fruit of Momordica charantia L.) on blood sugar level

Crude products of balsam pear contain polypeptides, some of which derease blood sugar levels (FMC I and constituent B) while some increase them (FMC II and constituent A). These ingredients were separated from the fruit of Momordica charantia FMC I, similar to insulin in certain respects, decrease blood sugar level in normal mice as well as in mice with diabetes. FMC II, similar to glucagon in certain respects, increases blood sugar level in normal mice.
