Fatty liver changes in cattle with abomasal displacement

Cytological studies were performed on liver cells obtained by small needle biopsy sampling of normal cows and cows with displaced abomasum. All cows with left displacement of the abomasum had moderate to severe fatty changes of the liver cells. This infiltration of fat is probably caused by increased transport of non-esterified fatty acids to the liver and decreased production of lipoproteins. The metabolic disturbance may be due to unbalanced feeding before calving. The same imbalance can cause abomasal displacement.
