This photo essay addresses the daily burden faced by HIV-positive people in Pumwani, Nairobi. Prostitution is openly practiced, sanitary conditions are poor, and HIV infection rates are estimated to be as high as forty percent. More than 2,000 prostitutes have been studied over the past ten years, and 24 have remained HIV-negative. Researchers believe that some people may have a natural immunity, perhaps linked to their human leukocyte antigens (HLA). The HIV-negative women will be tested twice as frequently as the HIV-positive women in an effort to learn more about their apparent immunity to the virus.
