The first part of the paper deals, in an academic manner, with the theoretical aspects of the relationship between the cooperative form of organization and promotion of social justice and alleviation of poverty. The second part presents the actual practice of cooperatives in Asia and the extent of their involvement in programmes of rural poverty alleviation in some developing countries in Asia. The paper was the keynote address at the 7th national convention on Studies in cooperation, New Dehli, December 1986.
